Tire Chains??

Postby 844x4 on Feb 08 2010 12:55 pm

I was wondering if anyone actually carries tire chains in their 4x4?
Here's what I found on the state site (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/truck ... tml#4wheel)

{"If I have 4-wheel-drive, do I need to carry chains?

Yes. Even though weather conditions may not warrant the use of chains on 4-wheel-drive vehicles at a particular time, to enter a chain control area, you must have a set of chains (for one drive axle) for your vehicle in your possession. If conditions worsen or you have trouble controlling your vehicle, you must stop and install the chains."}

What have your experiences been with this?
I have been through some pretty good snow with little to no trouble.. But I'm mainly thinking about rules and regulations on my way to the slopes and what not like what happens if you get pulled over and do not have them etc.

Would a patrol car stop me for not having chains on / in my 4runner you think?

i dont think so. Most of the time you will get waved thru without having chains on 50 heading toward Sierra at Tahoe. But im no expert. i usually wait for rob to chime in on stuff like this.  :D

That link is pretty clear - you're suppose to have chains.  Whether or not you'd get a ticket would be up to the officer, but they'd have the law on their side if you didn't have them.

In the past I've been waved through and never asked if I had chains.

I use to until I got the 35's.  Since I never used the chains for the 32's then 33's I never bought a set for the 35's.

Can you be cited for not having them in your 4wd, "yes" Is it likely you would be cited "no" unless you fail the attitude test and piss off the cop.  I wrote many tickets for 2wd cars not having them, but never a 4wd.

I have 37" chains, but for 12.5 tires.  Mine are 13.5.  I guess I could still carry them...

I'd carry a set, but man, are they expensive!
Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.
