I like it.  It was good fishing when I was there, and it's an easy hike into desolation.  if you are up for it you can hike the Barett lake trail.

Call Barbera Boxer, only she knows for sure. It's pretty sad that we need a permit just to walk in the forest these days

Here's some light reading to get you ready for your camp out...

Barrett is not in desolation, so you don't need a permit to hike that trail.

I've camped there and loved it, Its a beautiful lake, almost impossible to get a reservation.  No motorboats are allowed on the lake.  One camp ground is next to the lake, the other a little away.  Take a day trip up to Barrett since thats the trailhead.  Part of the lake has privately owned homes on forest land.

I was up there two weekends ago.  From Wright's Lake, I hiked up to Island Lake, awesome little lake up there.  The Ranger actually hiked up to where we were to check our permits.  Later I saw him talking with another group of people and observed those hikers pulling their wallets out right on the trail.

It's a good thing Barrett is not in the Desolation Wilderness, next time I'll hike that instead......

Bring your camera, there are some beautiful pastures and fields up there, still lush and green from the late snow runoff.

Bears scare the crap out of me these days. They are getting smarter and attacking people in their sleep. I think we need to take back the forests, these liberal politicians have everything messed up  :hack:

It's kind of a loud crowded campground on summer weekends.

The ranger there isn't particularly 4wd friendly as I remember either.  Pretty much assumes you're going to be a drunk troublemaker.  It's a nice enough spot though.  Didn't we camp there during the infamous Barrett night run?  Dark lake is where Heidi took the picture of Kelly that she painted.
Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.
